With Didactum`s new Monitoring System 500 II you get a proven monitoring solution to protect your mission-critical facilities and remote sites. This monitoring device is applicable across sectors and suitable for monitoring of sensitive IT infrastructure (server room / data center), as well as for production areas and remote technical rooms.
The monitoring system 500 II is a stand-alone monitoring device. Thanks to it`s full SNMPv1, SNMPv2c and SNMPv3 (encrypted) support, this networked remote monitoring unit can be used with SNMP monitoring tools and Network Management Systems (NMS) such as Nagios or OpenNMS and many, many more. This monitoring device has a built-in Web server for easy configuration. It supports standard network protocols such as CAN, DHCP, HTTP, HTTPS, SNMP, SNMPget, SMTP, FTP, Radius, Syslog and TLS. State changes, operating problems and critical events are reported immediately by e-mail, FTP, Syslog or SNMP. If you order the optional Quad Band GSM modem (item No. 14025), this high-end monitoring system also send critical events and alarms via SMS directly to your mobile phone. This is recommended for example in case of malfunction or failure of your network connections.
Connection for 8 SNMP sensors, extendable using CAN units
The Monitoring System 500 II provides on the front panel 8 analog sensor ports. Depending on your requirement, you can choose your individual sensor from Didactum`s extensive range of sensors.
These SNMP-enabled sensors are divided into 3 groups:
- Environmental Sensors (temp, humidity, airflow, water, smoke detector, gas detector)
- Security Sensors (door contacts, motion detectors, vibration sensors, sirens)
- Power Monitoring Sensors (AC voltage sensors, DC voltage sensors, dry contact sensors)
Configure your custom SNMP-enabled remote measurement and alerting system with sensors such as temperature sensors, humidity sensors, vibration sensors, smoke detectors, motion detectors, water sensors, magnetic door contacts or voltage sensors. Each intelligent sensor is labelled with a sticker and supplied with a included patch cable and mounting tape. If needed the cable length can be extended on request. Via Autoidentification function, the sensors are automatically recognized by remote monitoring unit and displayed in it`s multilingual Web GUI. Set individually selectable thresholds and limits for each SNMP enabled sensor. Then simply set the desired notifications or alarms.
For connection of a larger number of sensors, so you can connect sensor expansion units to the CAN bus port. Use only one serial RJ-12 patch cable to connect CAN sensors and CAN units. For many years CAN bus (Controller Area Network) is a industry proven field bus protocol. The total length of the CAN bus can be up to 305 meters (1000 ft). Ideal for the integration of other critical infrastructure.
Evaluation of the measured data directly in remote units WebGUI
In multilingual web interface of your network enabled remote measurement system you can easily analyze the sensor data stored in the data logger. Let you, for example, show the temperature profile in the server room or production area and check if the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems working properly. Quite simply, you can export the recorded data via mouse click as RSS, XML, or CSV files. Ideal for reports in case of audits or checks.
Integration of building- , UPS- and HVAC- systems into Network Management Systems (NMS)
This networked rack monitoring system supports you in convergence of house and building technology into information technology (IT). This IP-based remote monitoring unit has 4 inputs for 7/24/365 dry contact monitoring. Connect by 2-wire cable your important UPS system, air conditioning and ventilation system, emergency equipment or fire alert system into your SNMP enabled (Network) monitoring device. Get important notifications immediately by siren, e-mail, SMS (GSM modem required), or by SNMP traps. If you need a higher amount of zero-voltage contacts, just attach the dry contact unit with additional 32 or 64 dry contact inputs.
Optional expansion board
Equip your 500 II remote monitoring device with the optional expansion board. Here, you get 8 additional dry contact inputs, 2 relays and 1 port for Backup battery. The 2 relays can be controlled manually, by SNMP command or by any of Didactum`s sensors. The integrated logic of 500 II remote monitoring unit supports a variety of rules and automatic actions. Here, you can attach a rack cooling system to the relays. If rack temperature gets too high, the Didactum 500 II automatically switches the cooling fans on.
The precise Didactum temperature sensor detects a crtical temperature rise in the Server cabinet. To protect the sensitive server and storage equipment, the 500 II rack monitoring system automatically switches on the connected cooling fan systems. The administrators will be alerted by SMS and SNMP traps to Nagios monitoring software. After restoring the desired temperature in 19-inch rack, the fans will are turned off automatically. This example is transferable to other constellations. The integrated relays of opitonal expansion board support applications such as process control and/or power management. The 12V DC Backup Power input supports Didactum`s Li-ION battery. In case of power failure in server room, data center or production, the 500 II remote monitoring device can continue to work up to 6 hours and can send important notifications and alerts.
Optional 1-Wire board
The 500 II remote monitoring unit can be equipped with an optional 1-Wire board. Here, you can connect up to 20 pcs. 1-Wire temp sensors in series. Each 1-Wire sensor has it`s own SNMP OID and can be polled via network/internet with SNMP tools (e.g. Cacti) or Network Management Software (e.g. HP OpenView, IBM Tivoli, Nagios, OpenNMS, WhatsUp Gold and many more). The total cable length can be up to 100 meters (328 ft). Alternatively, an RFID card reader (item No.14064) or electronic key reader can also be connected to the 1-wire board. Here, you get a proven solution for access control of the computer room and server room. Connect e.g. door locks to the 2 integrated 12VDC outputs of 500 II monitoring appliance.
Note: The monitoring system 500 II can be equipped either with a 1-Wire board or expansion board. Both boards can not be installed in one unit.
Integrated logic for notifications and alarms / Sensor Mapping
The networked 500 II remote monitoring device provides users with a built-in map function. Here you can integrate the floor plan of your infrastructure. Then you can easly insert the installed sensors into the alert map. Critical events (water leakage, fire, temperature rise, etc.) can be displayed on the alarm map. This monitoring unit provides notifications and alerts such as E-mail, SMS (GPRS / GSM modem required), and SNMP traps. You can also merge Didactum`s intelligent sensors to groups and define logical links for automatical actions.
Due to an air conditioning failure, the temperature in server room and server cabinets rises. In the WebGUI of the networked measurement and alert system, you specify that in case of cabinet temperature of 30° C, the connected fan cooling unit must be switched on. Should the rack temperature exceed the critical temperature of 40 ° Celsius, a second fan system should be switched on and the technicians / administrators must be alerted by siren, E-mail and SMS. The OpenNMS network monitoring platform, installed in the headquarter, must be notified by 500 II in form of SNMP traps. As part of your emergency plan, you can create your individual alarm schedules. All events are stored in the syslog of Didactum monitoring device and can be easily exported.
Optional Quad-Band GSM Modem with Remote SMS-Command functionalities
The fully SNMP-enabled 500 II remote monitoring unit can be equipped with an optional GPRS / GSM modem. Critical conditions and malfunctions in your sensible infrastructure can be reliable reported via SMS. To do this, simply enter the phone numbers and the names of the recipients. The content of the SMS message can be set individually. The 500 II remote security monitoring units offers integrated macro functions. By using remote SMS command functions, your monitoring system can perfom automatic actions. This is very helpful in case of Network failure or for unmanned locations without network / internet connection. After you have defined the mobile phone numbers, you can send important commands such as switching relays on or off. Each remote SMS command is acknowledged by 500 II remote monitoring device via SMS.
Didactum temperature sensor - Temperature monitoring of sensitive infrastructures
Measure and monitor this important environmental factor in your temperature sensitive infrastructure. Make sure that a sudden temperature does not affect your mission critical infrastructure. A permanent temperature recording is important in the context of compliance. It is also suitable for audits.

The temperature sensor is easily connected via RJ11 patchcable to the Didactum monitoring system and automatically displayed on it`s WEB GUI. As part of the temperature monitoring, you can easily query this sensor via Network or Internet.
The temp sensor can be located up to 100 meters from the Didactum monitoring devices by using your own RJ-11 cable. Each sensor can be configured in the web interface of the Didactum monitoring system individually. Specify the individual limit and warning values of each sensor! Get reliably informed by e-mail or SNMP traps.
The environmental factor humidity (RH) plays a significant role in many mission-critical infra- structures in today’s world where these systems are highly sensitive and can be very vulnerable to failure due to sudden changes in their installed environments.
For example low humidity levels can cause static charges which can be disastrous for computing equipment in server rooms and data centers, possibly causing catastrophic failures.
Another example would be the presence of excessive humidity which can cause the formation of condensation. These often unnoticed or unseen microscopic water particles can be present on your server’s mainboards and most likely would dead to short circuits or other severe damage to your critical equipment. Therefore, it is highly useful to measure relative humidity consistently and permanently within your sensitive areas and to be alerted immediately if your humidity levels are in danger of causing irreversible damage to your critical infrastructures.

Easy installation of Didactum humidity sensor:
The installation of Didactum`s relative humidity sensor is simple. You just have to connect the included patch cable from the humidity sensor to the network enabled Didactum monitoring device. On request you can extend this humidity sensor up to 50 meters from the Didactum monitoring unit. Per the Auto-Sense function of this sensor it is automatically detected and displayed in Didactum`s easy-to-use multilingual web GUI. Didactum`s humidity sensor is supplied with 2 meters patch cable and mounting hardware (screws / mounting tape).
This Didactum leak sensor has been developed for the reliable detection of water and moisture. This water leak sensor is compatible with all Didactum SNMPv1/v2c/v3 enabled remote monitoring devices. Simply connect this leakage sensor via the patch cable included to one of the 8 sensor ports of your Didactum monitoring system.
With the unit’s built auto-sense feature your water leakage sensor is immediately detected and displayed in the multilingual web interface of your Didactum monitoring device. From the user friendly web GUI you can now set the desired type of alert you require for example email alerts, SMS alerts (GSM Modem needed), alerts via SNMP traps to your building or system monitoring software

Quick and easy installation of Didactum`s water leakage sensor
The leak sensor is supplied complete with screws and mounting tape. A two meter patch cable is also included. You can also extend this water detection sensor if required with your own patch cable up to 100 meters from the Didactum remote monitoring system.
The Didactum smoke sensor was developed specifically for the early detection of fire and smoke. The sensor is also compatible with all SNMP enabled Didactum monitoring systems and PDU`s.

Easy installation of Didactum`s smoke detector
For the early detection of smoke and fire this smoke sensor should be installed on the ceiling of your infrastructures being monitored. You can also easily install this smoke detection sensor in server your cabinets and enclosures. No additional battery is required due to this sensor being powered by the Didactum monitoring base unit.
Simply connect this smoke detector to any one of the analog sensor ports of your Didactum Monitoring System using the patch cable that is included.
Didactum`s built-in auto-sensing feature allows the smoke detector to be automatically listed in the web interface of your base unit. You can then easily set your notifications and alerts in case of fire or smoke. Detector detects smoke indoors. Operating temperature: 0… +70°С. Chain connection is possible. Max. distance of the first sensor from the unit is 150 meters.
(A (smoldering) fire in your server room or data center environment can lead to fatal consequences. By installing suitable smoke detectors catastrophic events can be avoided by being reliably detected and alerted to them at an early stage.)
Receive in the event of a network failure important status messages or alarms directly on your mobile phone / smartphone. The 500 II monitoring unit also supports remote SMS commands. Thanks to integrated macro functions of SNMP-enabled 500 II monitoring device, the content of the SMS alert can be individually customized.
Expansion module for 500 II monitoring systems
The Ethernet-based 500 II IT monitoring system is modular and can be extended flexibly. With this expansion module the basic model of the 500 II monitoring system is supplemented by additional important features.

Switch on fan systems connected to the two relays or pumps. The two bi-stable relays can be switched manually or in interaction with the intelligent, IP-capable sensors in the German-language web interface. This is where you can easily define the desired actions in the built-in logic of the Monitoring System 500 II. The expansion module is automatically recognized by the IT monitoring system. The individual components then appear in the tactical overview / in the device tree of the Monitoring System 500 II. In the built-in logic of the Didactum monitoring device, you can then define individual actions, notifications and alarm messages.
Practical Example 1: Interaction Switching outputs with the intelligent sensors
The air conditioning system in the server room is not working and the server, storage and network components present in the IT rack are likely to overheat. The precise temperature sensors immediately detect the temperature in the server cabinet. In the logical scheme of the 500 II IT monitoring system, you have defined by rule that if the temperature in the IT rack is exceeded, the roof ventilation system connected to switching relay no. 1 is automatically switched on. If the barrier temperature reaches Celsius values beyond the 40 degree mark, the monitoring system must additionally switch on the ventilation system connected to relay No. 2. At the same time, the Rack Monitoring System 500 II must send the necessary alarm messages by e-mail and SMS (optional GSM modem required) to the building and building technicians. The IT department is informed about the failure of the air conditioning system via SNMP traps to the Nagios monitoring software.
Practical example 2: Monitoring the alarm contacts / potential-free contacts of the air conditioning system and the UPS battery
At the 8 additional inputs of the expansion module, the alarm outputs / alarm contacts of the air conditioning unit and the UPS system were connected via two-wire signal cables. As soon as the air conditioning system signals a fault or the company's main servers run on a UPS battery power, the 500 II Remote IT monitoring system must send the alarm messages in the form of e-mails, SMS to the technicians' mobile phones and SNMP traps to the network management solution HP OpenView, EMC Smart, CA Unicenter, IBM Tivoli, Nagios, check_MK, OpenNMS, PRTG, and so on).
Practical example 3: Power supply of the IT monitoring system via LiION battery
Due to a power failure, the UPS and the storage are powered by the UPS system. Unfortunately, the UPS batteries have not been serviced so that the originally calculated bridging time is considerably reduced. Already after 2 minutes stands for the IT systems no more battery power available. The installed Nagios monitoring program has also failed. The lithium-ion battery connected to the 12V input of the expansion module now powers the Didactum Monitoring System 500 II, so that the technicians and IT managers are alerted via the built-in GPRS / GSM modem (optional feature).
Notes: The expansion module must be ordered when ordering the 500 II monitoring system. This module is then installed in the factory especially for you.
A subsequent retrofit by Didactum technicians at the location in Münster (Germany) is possible. To do this, you must submit the IT Remote Monitoring System. The installation including function test is chargeable. The 500 II rack monitoring system with expansion module and the 1-Wire module is not supported.

This remote monitoring unit replaces an older AKCP security probe which is 4 years old. My company decided to switch to Didactum because of the much lower price and the cool features. We have more than 5 of this Didactum units in our server rooms now. All units work excellent. I'd definitely purchase Didactum again if needed. Robert
